From Maranola there is a track leading up into the Aurunci Mountains to Monte Redentore, which is suitable for vehicles up to a certain point, however it is best to complete the last section on foot to reach the summit.

At the peak of Monte Redentore, at a height of 1252 metres above sea level, is the bronze statue of Christ the Redeemer, built in 1901 to mark the beginning of a new century.  In 1907  it was badly damaged by a lightning strike

From this vantage point, on a clear day, spectacular panoramic vistas can be seen of Formia, the Gulf of Gaeta, Scauri, the estuary of the Garigliano, the Campania coastline and even Vesuvius, not to mention the islands of Ischia, Procida, Capri and some of the Pontine Islands.

Nearby are the highest peaks of the Aurunci Mountain range, Monte Sant’Angelo at 1402 metres and Monte Petrella at 1535 metres.

Also close-by on the slopes of Monte Altino there is the hermitage of San Michele Arcangelo, which is set into a cave and rock face. The sanctuary was built on the remains of an ancient Benedictine monastery which dated from the ninth century but was rebuilt during the nineteenth century in a Neo-Gothic style.  Each year on the last Sunday in June there is a solemn pilgrimage from Maranola where the statue of San Michele is carried up to this church. Mass is then celebrated, after which the local shepherds offer the pilgrims fresh cheese made from goat's milk.   The statue of San Michele remains here during the summer months to guard the mountains. Finally on the 29th September there is another procession to return the statue to the Church of the Annunziata in Maranola.

Each Christmas-time a “Live Nativity” scene is re-enacted within the Medieval streets of Maranola, depicting the life of times gone by, with local folk carrying out their various trades and professions and handicrafts.

The “Il Presepe Vivente” can normally be seen in Maranola on the evenings of the 26th December, 1st January and 6th January.
